"God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing." C.S. Lewis
The Ames SCBWI group hosted Derek Anderson with a wine and cheese country party. Derek gave wonderful advice to both authors and illustrators and shared his story of successes with us, and mistakes he made along the way. He was most gracious to us and we all benefited from his experience. He took time to answer our individual questions for both authors and artists, and gave great advice to our illustrators after looking over their portfolios. It was like having our own mini-conference with him. He is an Iowan and graduated from Ames High and ISU. Anyway, it was fantastically fabulous. We had such a great time! Thank you Derek! ~S
Here are some wise words from Derek: Be confident in your work! He got his break when-- he scheduled a trip to New York and made some appointments and also did drop off portfolios -- when he mails something, he always addresses a specific editor,or it will go in the slush pile-- editors want courtesy, say thank you -- when you do get a book deal, because the editor took a chance on you, give them first choice on your next manuscript. About his job, he says: "I have the best job in the world. I get to make up pictures all day and listen to music." Ames resident Chuck Richards had a show-case exhibit at the Brunnier Museum & Gallery at ISU. He gave a very entertaining talk about his road to getting published (with help from Derek Anderson -- fellow Ames-ite) and his humorous journey in developing his stories and art. Chuck is the author/illustrator of Critter Sitter.
